Every Woman Essentials: The Little Black Dress

Style - Hope's How-To

Can you tell I've a serious love for the little black dress? Saving the best for last, this clothing classic is number ten on Hope's Top 10 Every Woman Essentials List. And in the spirit of saving, check my list of high-to-low-priced dresses. Whether you're a woman ready to splurge, or one who's on a budget, I'm quite confident that there's a dress on this list for you.

1. Giambattista Valli Ruched Stretch-Silk Dress ($2,595, Net-A-Porter): From Fendi to Emanuel Ungaro, I'm pretty sure there's not a piece of clothing Giambattista Valli's created that I don't love, and this ruched stretch-silk dress is no exception. Featuring a beautiful boned waist and ruching, this LBD will highlight the curves of even the straightest figure. The silhouette is feminine and flows from the shoulders to the knees. I'm especially loving the princess neckline and deep v back.

2. J.Crew Silk Taffeta Gracie Dress ($250, J.Crew): Again with the v back. This silk taffeta Gracie dress by J.Crew is so sweet, featuring a halter front that flows into an elegant v-shaped back. It will do wonders worn on the right shoulders. Understated elegance at its finest, I love the subtle sophistication of this taffeta LBD. The waist is inset, and the skirt is straight, so this dress will have a slimming effect on your figure.

3. Single Black Ponte Knit Asymmetrical Dress ($149, Bluefly): Pretty and polished, this LBD by Single has some interesting angles. What first drew me to it, — besides the classic sheath shape, — was the asymmetrical neckline. The neckline is complemented by cap sleeves, and goes straight across the shoulders. This regal dress also comes with a patent belt, which I'd remove or replace with a favourite from my closet. There's no shortage of details in this little black dress; check the hidden side pockets!

4. J.Crew Twilight Shift Dress ($148, J.Crew): Classic with a twist, the twilight shift dress by J.Crew is a dress for the ages. What I love most about it are the look-too-quick-and-you'll-miss midnight navy silk side panels. They have a subtle slimming effect. The crew neck works its way into a back keyhole that has a silk charmeuse tie. This is one mini dress that wears well for both work and play.

5. Calvin Klein Sleeveless Sheath Dress (was $99, on sale $37.49, Macy's): This Calvin Klein dress is the best deal out of my quintet of little black dresses. I love the sheath styling — crew neck and straight shape — that will style sophisticated for any occasion. Truly a timeless dress, this Calvin Klein number is reminiscent of style icon Audrey Hepburn. It will wear the same in ten years as it does today. And for less than 100 dollars? I challenge you to find something sweeter.
