Ask Hope Robertson: How a Guy Should Style a Scarf

Fashion - Men

Ask Hope Robertson

Hi Hope - What's your advice for a guy tying a scarf? I have a cool one that I just put once around my neck. Not sure how it would look if I knotted it?

In a word? Hot.

A guy who can style a scarf is a guy who girls will notice.

You could do the drape, and let the scarf hang around your neck, but that's boring. My advice would be to fold your scarf in half, put it around the back of your neck, then pull the ends through the loop (see top left style).

You could do a classic knot by putting the scarf around your neck and tying once.

If you've got an extra-long scarf, try the double-wrap: Wrap your scarf around your twice, letting the ends fall over your chest.

Ask Hope Robertson: Which Overcoat to Buy

Fashion - Men

Ask Hope Robertson

Hope: Can you find me an overcoat that I can wear this Spring? Ideally I'd spend less than $500. I like black, but I'm open to your suggestions. Thanks in advance.

You're welcome in advance. Check these coats and let me know what you think:

1. Mackage black cotton trench w leather trim (L): I love Mackage for several reasons, one being they're CANADIAN!, and two being their products are quality at its finest. Pretty much you'll purchase a coat by Mackage and you'll keep it forever. Or close enough to it. The 'Ben' trench is a mid-weight cotton blend, and this overcoat will protect your suits and keep you stylish. Love the leather trim detail, the spread collar, back vent, and easy front button closure. This Mackage coat has dual angled pockets, and an optional belt at the waist (which you may or may not want to cinch, depending if you're styling a suit jacket underneath). And it's black. Cha-ching! (Mackage black cotton ben trench, $379.99, Bluefly)

2. J.Crew Sutherland trench coat (C): J.Crew has a fantastic men's suiting collection. If you haven't already, I highly recommend it. The Sutherland trench is a coated cotton/nylon blend and is sure to become more than just an overcoat. It's basic style makes it versatile, so you can wear it over your suits or over jeans and sweater come weekend-ing time. There are hidden button tabs at the collar, a back vent, and a lower front placket to keep you bundled. Keeping the style clean, this coat was designed with no belt, and hidden waist pockets. Available in british khaki. (J.Crew Sutherland trench coat, $198 or $218 Tall, J.Crew)

3. Asos Carrington twill trench coat (R): Coming in at the bottom of your budget, ASOS has a classic twill trench that I absolutely love. It features a wide collar, several pockets, button tabs at the sleeves, and an optional belt at the waist (again, you'll want to cinch depending on what you're wearing underneath). Available in black. (ASOS Carrington twill trench coat, $118.80, ASOS)

Gucci G Detail Wrap-Around Sunglasses

Gucci Shiny G Detail Sunglasses

No men, as much as you wish you were, you are not and probably never will be a superhero.

Therefore, it makes absolutely zero sense that you should want to style a pair of sunnies that wrap around and wing out like the Bat-Super-Spider-Iron-man ones you're currently wearing.

Seriously.

Who says you have to sacrifice style for coverage? Check these Gucci sunglasses. Better coverage than your Uvex sportster polarized lenses, Gucci's G detail sunglasses feature wide acrylic stems and a thick wrap frame. The lenses are tinted grey - which isn't annoyingly obvious when you're wearing them (as polarized lenses can be). Gucci's sunglasses offer full UV protection, and they look stylish. They're available in black or havana brown.

J.Crew Nailhead Oxford Utility Shirt

Fashion - Men

J.Crew Nailhead Oxford shirt

I've had a few emails from gentlemen readers inquiring as to whether or not the denim shirt is really making a comeback for this Spring, and if so, should they be investing in this piece for their seasonal wardrobe.

The answer is simple: Yes, and yes.

While I've never been a huge fan of the denim shirt, or closely following every trend in every season, I will admit that there is something about a worn-in oxford shirt in that blue cotton that is kind of... ruggedly handsome.

I'm especially loving J.Crew's nailhead oxford utility shirt, designed with workwear from the 1900s in mind. A thicker blend of cotton, this shirt features classic camp pockets, a bit more of a tailored fit than you gents may be used to, annnd it looks great on.

At 98 dollars, it's reasonably priced, and probably a piece you'll keep for at least a couple of seasons.

Ask Hope Robertson: What Shoes to Wear with Straight-Leg Jeans

Fashion - Men

Hope: I'm looking for a casual pair of shoes I can wear this Spring. My girlfriend bought me a few pairs of jeans with a straight leg that are tighter than what I'm used to, and they don't look right with my sneakers.

J.Crew MacAlister boots

Really, sneakers don't look right with much excepting maybe warm-up pants. And anyone wearing warm-up pants, well...

You should really purchase a pair - or two - of J.Crew's MacAlister boots. Soft suede and crepe-soled, these boots are the perfect answer for transitioning from winter to spring.

Available in dark khaki, chestnut, stone, and anchor grey (shown above), J.Crew's MacAlister was inspired by boots worn by British officers in WWII. They're made in Italy so you know these shoes will last for years.
