Hope's Top Ten Essential Pieces of Jewelry for Every Woman: The Statement Brooch

Fashion - Slideshow

While a brooch may sound matronly, it's actually one of the most timeless pieces of jewelry you'll ever own. If you're like me, you've been blessed enough to inherit some beautiful heirlooms over the years; and if not, there are some absolutely arresting statement brooches on the market today. Whether you opt for a vintage brooch, or something designed for today's woman, a statement brooch is a must-have — number six on my top ten essential pieces of jewelry that every woman should own.

I love a brooch that packs some serious punch. The right brooch can set off a basic black blazer, or it can add an element of youthful glamour when affixed to a scarf of sweater.

Check my choices for favourite statement brooches, priced high to low:

  • Elsa Peretti® Starfish brooch: Life beneath the waves translates itself into beautiful 18k gold, styled contemporary by famed designer Elsa Peretti. Also available in sterling silver, this brooch (for less $$$), Elsa Peretti's starfish brooch would look perfect clasped over a cardigan or crewneck sweater. ($3,050 CDN, Tiffany & Co.)
  • Kenneth Jay Lane Swarovski crystal lizard brooch: In my eyes, Kenneth Jay Lane can do no wrong with his designs. I'm loving the look of this lizard brooch. Gunmetal-plated metal finished with sparkling olive and green pavé Swarovski crystals and blue crystals along the back, this Kenneth Jay Lane pin will work with just about any item in your wardrobe. ($250, Net-A-Porter)
  • And Mary vintage style brooch: Styled like something out of the forties, this And Mary vintage-esque brooch has a cut-out filigree design, diamante-like stones, and polished glass black beads mounted on a gold-tone surround. Because of its size and shape, this brooch would look well over a closed collar, or affixed over the heart. (sale $21.49, ASOS)

Hope's Top Ten Essential Pieces of Jewelry for Every Woman: Bracelet

Fashion - Slideshow

A bracelet can be simple and still be stunning; bracelets can also be extravagant and entirely elegant. No matter what your personal style — classic lady, minimalist, or bohemian — there's a bracelet out there that's right for you. And so I introduce number four on Hope's Top Ten Essential Pieces of Jewelry for Every Woman —

The bracelet.

Because I classify bejeweled cuffs in the bracelet category, behold my choices for three completely eye-catching accoutrements, priced high to low, as I know you've come to appreciate.

  • Emilio Pucci plexiglass and crystal cuff: Can Pucci do no wrong? Even now that Peter Dundas is at the helm, the iconic fashion house is still producing designs that make bold statements. Check this pink cuff, highlighted by magenta crystals. ($990, Net-A-Porter)
  • Alexis Bittar crystal encrusted aster bracelet: Starting out in the vintage jewelry field, Alexis Bittar eventually began designing his own jewelry, and even worked with Patricia Fields on Sex and the City. This crystal encrusted bracelet is both dainty and daring, and would add a delicate complement to whatever you happen to be wearing. PS the hinged closure with magnetic clasp means easy on and off. ($275, Shopbop)
  • J.Crew classic thin bangle: Layer and layer, and layer some more! J.Crew's classic thin bangle is a must-have in every colour and thickness. Don't believe me? Check my jewelry box. These are the prettiest, most durable, and most stylish item you can own for under 30 dollars. For real. J.Crew's bangles are finished in hand-enambled 14k gold, over brass, so even when the gold fades, you've still got a gold-like finish. And the colours? Have a look for yourself. Love these. ($21.50, J.Crew)

Home Style: West Elm Ikat Curtains

Fashion - Slideshow

I've been searching for the ideal ikat curtains, and these West Elm window panels may be just the ticket.

Available in panel sizes ranging in height from 63 inches to 108 inches, the ikat ogee linen window panel from West Elm is a healthy blend of 55 percent linen and 45 percent cotton. The fabric texture is ideal for window panels, however the fabric thickness leaves something to be desired (for complete opaque coverage you'd need a liner).

What I love about ikat patterns is how they can work in just about any environment. Whether in a dining, living, or sleeping area, ikat patterns act to add interest and depth to a room without being too bold. And the ivory/straw colour of this motif? A calming neutral that will work with just about any colour scheme. The diamond trellis design of these particular West Elm curtains is completely chic and could work in a contemporary or more traditional setting.

These West Elm window panels have a grommet top, so once you find the perfect hardware to complement, you'll be set to install.

It's that easy.

Hope's Top Ten Essential Pieces of Jewelry for Every Woman

Fashion - Slideshow

Marilyn Monroe famously said that diamonds are a girl's best friend. She was right, but she also should have mentioned that pearls, gold, and gemstones are all of utmost importance.

We've already looked at Hope's Top Ten Essentials for Every Woman's Wardrobe, and now it's time we talk accessories. That's right, ladies, there are several pieces of jewelry that are absolute essentials. While I'm a big believer in all things authentic, I fully recognize that not every budget can afford real, so work with what you can.

Number one on my list of top ten essential pieces of jewelry for every woman?

Hoop Earrings!

Hoop earrings are so versatile — smaller hoop earrings wear well to work, and large hoop earrings make for a playful after-hours accessory. Depending on your preference, your hoop earrings may be silver or gold, and whatever the case, just make sure they're part of your jewelry collection.

Check my choices for hoop earrings, priced low to high:

  • Peoples Jewellers 14K White Gold Hoop Earrings: With a diamond-cut finish, these hoop earrings from Peoples Jewellers are affordably priced at $89.99. With a hinged closure, and a moderate size (17 x 19mm), these earrings won't do serious damage to your budget. ($89.99, Peoples Jewellers)
  • Ippolita Wavy Rose Gold Hoop Earrings: Launched in 1999, Ippolita's jewelry line is simplistic and entirely elegant. Take these large hoop earrings for example. 18-karat yellow gold plated with beautiful 18-karat rose gold, and an sculptural shape make these mid-priced earrings very appealing. ($395, Neiman Marcus)
  • Gurhan Spring Drop Hoop Earrings: Renowned Turkish jewelry designer Gurhan Orhan is a master when it comes to pure gold designs. These hand-hammered 24-karat yellow gold hoop earrings feature teardrop shapes that are truly unique. Each Gurhan piece is numbered and signed by the artist. ($3120, Neiman Marcus)

Thought for the day

Fashion - Slideshow

Be your own unique self.

The reality of it is that there's only one you. Nobody else can illustrate you better than you. Fact: You've got one life to live, so rather than spend your time comparing yourself to others, and rather than trying to be 'cool' or like your favourite 'idol', just be you. If you're not, you'll never be the best you can be, and you'll always come in second place.

You were created as an individual with a unique purpose.

I don't mean to go all Oprah on you, but lately I've realized the importance of embracing my unique self and not posing as something other than what I really am. I hope you're encouraged on this February morning. Happy Monday, my friends!
