Spotlight On Spring/Summer 08 Trends: Belts

Forget 50s-inspired ‘chic’ (can we even call them that?) trend-followers cinching their waists with a belt so thick it wears more like a corset, wasp-waisting themselves in pencil skirts, sucking in and holding breath for shape’s sake, –

Wearing a belt for Spring/Summer 2008 is a breath of fresh air.

Forgetting past years of 4-inch and thicker standards for belt width, this coming season welcomes a wave of 3-inch and skinnier belts, cinched less 50s and more 70s: Sitting on the natural waist, but not hindering garment flow. Wearing a belt this season is definitely about structure, but not in a concrete constriction kind of way. The Spring/Summer 2008 runways saw the belt’s return to its roots as a fabulous accoutrement.

Case in point?

Designers like Alice Temperley, Michael Kors, and Peter Som all embraced the belt as an accessory in their Spring/Summer 2008 collections – whether in a bright colour or neutral hue — and styled it over skirts, spring jackets, and even cocktail shorts for a completely classic look.

I especially love the idea of accessorizing a neutral-coloured outfit with a jewel-toned belt. Think of how you could change the look of a blazer or trench coat from last year simply by wrapping a skinny belt around your waist! The possibilities are endless (kind of how your legs will look with a belt’s elegant effect).

  1. oooh I am sooooo glad! I have a short torso and I think skinny belts won’t cut me off as much as the thick corset-like belts. Thanks for the great suggestions!

  2. I’m glad thick belts are making their way off the scene. Skinny belts are easier to style and less in-your-face.

  3. Amen and amen.

I couldn’t agree with you beauties more!
