SPOTLIGHT ON | Betsey Johnson | Dresses
It’s ironic how someone so eccentric can design dresses so classic and elegant, but it just proves that fashion truly is Betsey Johnson’s forte. Her awareness of self is so obvious in each of her creations; she doesn’t follow trends or design clothing that’s stylish for 5 seconds or less. She designs what she loves, and that love is obvious in the quality and longevity of all her pieces.
Though I’ve never been a fan of embroidered floral patterns, I love how Betsey incorporated a typically casual embellishment into a more formal design (see first photo). At first glance, I couldn’t even tell the pattern was floral — my eye was more drawn to the scallops and tiers. I also love the cinched silk pull taut at the bodice for an au courant look.
I’m also eyeing this blush ombre bow dress (see dress on right). No doubt there is some debate as to whether or not bows and ombre stripes belong in the ’80s, but check the details: The sweet stripe pattern, the split-top overlay, and the double layered skirt. It’s clear this taffeta confection was created carefully.
Also take a peak at this metallic brocade cocktail dress (dress at left). In my experience, you can’t really go wrong wearing brocade, therefore Betsey’s brocade is guaranteed timeless. It’s far from basic black with metallic thread, a rhinestone oval buckle, and a pleated bust. Couple that with some simple but stand-out spaghetti straps attached to a sweetheart neckline, and you’ve got yourself a dress you’ll wear time and time again.

i love the third dress…it’s an adorable “little black dress”. I am very picky about my dresses but that one’s adorable!!
I love Betsey Johnson more than words can express! I actually think my closet can express it better than I can.
